The Oakland, California, Police Department announced it has acquired three unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) valued at $80,000 thanks to a donation by local businessman David Duong, CEO of California Waste Solutions (the city’s recycling contractor), and the Oakland Chinatown Improvement Council, a newly established community benefits district serving Chinatown.
According to The Oaklandside, the department has never owned its own drones and had to request help from other agencies prior to this. The devices will be used primarily for search-and-rescue missions and other special circumstances.
