The Baltimore Police Department may add cameras, replace doors, and eliminate the partitions of its prisoner transport vans, which became a focal point after the in-custody death of Freddie Gray.
Police Commissioner Anthony Batts told City Council members it would cost about $15,000 per vehicle to add these short-term upgrades to the fleet of 24 vans, reports WBALT.
Batts also offered the longer-range solution of replacing the existing vans. New vans could be equipped with shoulder harnesses to secure prisoners and offer more interior space, more doors, and cameras. Those vans would cost $51,000.
New York City now has the largest EV law enforcement fleet in North America, according to the city.
