ATLANTA- Mayor Kasim Reed unveiled a Power to Change sustainability plan with the goal of making Atlanta a top 10 city for sustainability. Changes include reducing fleet fuel consumption and ensuring that 15 percent of the city fleet is using alternative fuels by 2012, according to a release from the City.

The plan calls for a reduction of petroleum fuel consumption by 10 percent by 2015 by those municipal departments with the greatest levels of fleet fuel use.

Other targets include: reducing greenhouse gas emissions within the City's jurisdiction 25 percent by 2050, 40 percent by 2030, and 80 percent by 2050; reducing energy use of municipal operations 15 percent by 2020 and 80 percent by 2050, and making renewable energy 5 percent of total municipal use by 2015.

Several city departments have already made progress in previously set sustainability goals, including reduced gasoline use by municipal fleet, according to the release.

The City of Atlanta is currently ranked 19th among the SustainLane U.S. City Rankings, which ranks the most populous U.S. cities in terms of their sustainability practices.  

The release of the City's sustainability plan was the first event of Atlanta's first Sustainability Week, which runs Oct. 25-29.
