WASHINGTON – In celebration of National Public Works Week, the American Public Works Association (APWA) honored two Congressional leaders during a reception on Capitol Hill.

Chairman James Oberstar (D–MN) and Ranking Member John Mica (R–FL) of the House of Representatives Transportation and Infrastructure Committee (T&I) were recognized for their dedicated service, leadership, and support for America’s public infrastructure.

“Chairman Oberstar and Representative Mica have been tireless advocates for public works programs, services and policies,” said APWA President Larry Frevert. “Their commitment and support have made a far-reaching and positive impact on the nation’s infrastructure policies.”

Reception cosponsors included industry leaders from American Council of Engineering Companies, American Society of Civil Engineers, American Shore & Beach Preservation Association, The Associated General Contractors of America, Association of Equipment Manufacturers, National Association of Clean Water Agencies, National Association of Water Companies, Society of Municipal Arborists, and Water Environment Federation.

Celebrated May 18-24, 2008, National Public Works Week marks a celebration of the tens of thousands of men and women in North Americawho provide and maintain the infrastructure and services collectively known as public works. Instituted as a public education campaign by APWA in 1960, National Public Works Week calls attention to the importance of public works in community life.

The T&I Committee recently passed H. Res. 1137 in support of National Public Works Week. Sponsored by Oberstar, and cosponsored by more than 20 Congressional leaders, the resolution is expected for a full vote this week. The Senate also passed S. Res. 560 in honor of National Public Works Week.
