The aging New Orleans Fire Department fleet has come under increased scrutiny, following several vehicle breakdowns that stranded firefighters heading to calls, reports the New Orleans Advocate.

The agency's trucks, which are at least 10 years old, have become a negotiating chip in the firefighters' ongoing battle with the city with lawsuits over back pay and pension issues.

Fire Superintendent Tim McConnell has promised to make some moves to replace some of the trucks, and has acknowledged that there isn't enough money for new equipment. Replacing the city's entire fleet would cost $30 million and take five to six years.
