Public Fleets are as diverse as the organizations they serve; small fleets are at once in competition and in partnership with much larger entities for a wide range of resources, such as grant funding and skilled personnel. It’s imperative that smaller fleets learn to navigate the complexities of fleet management from each other as well as the established fleet management paradigm.
It is easy for a fleet manager of any size organization to get caught up in the details of running a fleet. There are so many details that must be tended to on an hourly basis it may seem like we provide more of a process than a product. While it is always important to keep your process working correctly we must be sure that the process reaches a desired end.
In the world of all that is consecrated in fleet management … (of course I mean the self help books and endless death by power point management seminars) we are taught to be the team leader, promote productivity and educate our departments on all the best practices.
Who would have thought that one day a fleet manager would be asked to search for “used” sanitation equipment.
In the straight laced world of government work it is not very often government fleets are thought of as innovators or trend setters. This lethargic city garage mentality must be broken at the back, its head severed and body burned to ashes and scattered to the four winds so that no trace of complacency remains.
One of the biggest challenges in a small fleet is credibility. Every one is a mechanic right??? Although it is likely true that most people in your organization have managed a few vehicles or at least some of their own vehicles. The natural trend for the department heads is to treat a piece of equipment like it was their own.
