DETROIT – By working closely with industry and academia nationwide to identify the latest technologies for hybrid, hydrogen, and fuel-cell vehicles, the U.S. Army's Tank Automotive Research, Development and Engineering Center (TARDEC), along with its National Automotive Center (NAC) is working to transfer these technologies for military and eventually industry use, according to Calstart/Weststart.
As reported on www.TheAutoChannel.com/, the Army is collaborating with many alternative fuels companies, including Quantum Technologies, Dana Corp., Eaton Corp., and United Solar Ovonic. The technologies include a hydrogen hybrid demonstrator vehicle that pairs hybrid-electric vehicles with hydrogen delivery and storage systems, intelligent hydraulic drive technology for medium tactical vehicles and the HMMWV, a hydraulic launch assist system, and a solar panel, which can be worn by soldiers and adapted to recharge a field generator or vehicle. These and many other new automotive technologies are being showcased at the 2006 SAE World Congress, April 3-6, in Detroit.
