The Albemarle County (Va.) Board of Supervisors plans to donate up to 15 surplus county fleet vehicles to Piedmont Virginia Community College (PVCC) for use in the college’s car-loan program. Cars are loaned out temporarily to PVCC students who do not have access to reliable transportation. Students pay for gas and regular oil changes, and the college covers insurance and long-term maintenance, reported NBC29.

Albemarle County usually puts surplus vehicles up for auction. “The projected revenue for these particular vehicles was less than $10,000 and to see the impact that this could have for that dollar amount is huge,” Board Chairman Ned Gallaway told The Daily Progress. “So that’s a no-brainer from that standpoint.”
