St. Louis will purchase a site and build it out as a maintenance facility for its fleet of trash trucks as well as fire department vehicles, after the Board of Alderman approved the project on Feb. 24.
The board authorized up to $13 million to purchase 1214-18 Central Industrial Drive and build it out as a garage and make repairs to a municipal garage at 1122 Clark Avenue, according to city documents. The city will finance the project by issuing revenue bonds through the St. Louis Municipal Finance Corp.
The new facility will allow the city to move from the north refuse site on Hall Street, which is being incorporated into Procter and Gamble's expansion plans.
The cost will be covered by $450,000 a year from rent payments by tenants who now lease space in the properties being purchased, $500,000 from the city's refuse department that originally went to an expiring lease-purchase program for trash trucks, and $500,000 in operations savings, including bringing back in house maintenance of fire trucks, reports St. Louis Public Radio.
