The Port Arthur, Texas, City Council is implementing a new plan to address the city’s ongoing trash collection delays caused by supply chain issues and other concerns brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The council discussed at its meeting on Jan. 11 several solutions for the trash collection delays, including:
A temporary change in the garbage collection schedule from a four-day collection schedule to a six- or seven-day schedule if landfill use is approved by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.
A six-month period in which the city would secure a contract to lease more garbage trucks and staffing services.
Port Arthur currently has a total of 12 garbage trucks, and as of now only five of those are in working order. The city hopes to have up to seven trucks working by the end of the week.
