READING, PA – Berks County’s new Chief Detective, Michael Gombar said he didn’t expect to become a used-car salesman. But Gombar said he had no choice after finding out that the District Attorney’s office owns 51 vehicles for 28 detectives, according to the Fort Mills Times.
Gombar said he’d rather be out fighting crime, but forced to sell the vehicles to get rid of them.
Records indicate 39 of the vehicles were bought with state funds and money seized in drug and other cases. Officials say a dozen others were seized in drug cases.
Gombar said he has sold seven vehicles for a total of $35,000 and expects to sell six more. The money is being used to buy new uniforms, bulletproof vests, and surveillance equipment.
In a recent development focused on improving operational efficiency, Franklin County, Missouri, has entered into agreements with Enterprise Fleet Management.
