ISELIN, NJ – Charles Gibbens, Jr., president of the National Association of Fleet Administrators, Inc. (NAFA), addressed the Virginia Department of Transportation’s (VDOT) Annual Equipment Repair Supervisors/Managers Workshop on Aug. 23-24, 2006. During his presentation Gibbens acknowledged Erle Potter, P.E., C.E.M., a recipient of this year’s Larry Goill award at NAFA’s FMI-LEG Conference & Exposition in Orlando, Fla. Potter, state equipment manager with VDOT’s Asset Management Division, received the Goill Award for his role in the development of VDOT’s TRUCKS (Training Rewards Us with Competencies, Knowledge and Skills) program. “Many years ago, NAFA partnered with Business Week magazine to recognize exceptional fleet management ideas that improved productivity or contributed to the bottom line savings for their employers,” Gibbens said. “It was called the Quality Fleet Management Idea Award. About 10 years ago, the award name was changed to include that of the late Larry Goill, who was NAFA’s vice president at the time and who was a key member of the fleet management team for Bell Canada. The Larry Goill Award is now co-sponsored by Bell Canada.” Following his speech, Gibbens assisted VDOT Commissioner Gregory Whirley in the presentation of plaques to members of the TRUCKS Team who contributed to the development and implementation of the TRUCKS program. The inscription on the plaques said: ‘In recognition of your support of the Virginia Department of Transportation’s Equipment Repair Technician Training Program as a member of the TRUCKS Team.’ Gibbens is the automotive fleet manager for the County of Henrico, Virginia. He maintains a diverse fleet of 2,800 vehicles with two maintenance shops, eight refueling sites, and a staff of 65.
