DALLAS – Dallas’ police department has said that converting more than 100 police cruisers to natural gas was a million-dollar mistake, according to the Web site www.nbc5i.com/. The department said that the cars weren’t suitable to police work and were difficult to maintain.
Officers had reported that the vehicle range was not up to par with their gasoline-powered counterparts and sometimes required multiple fill-ups per shift. Officers also claimed the acceleration was not adequate, according to the report. As a result, the Dallas Police Department moved the CNG cruisers to other divisions where high-performance wasn’t necessary. NBC 5 reported that nearly one-third of the natural gas police cruiser fleet is out of service, plagued by chronic mechanical problems.
