Dealership Issues Refund Checks After Overcharging for Police Vehicles

April 10, 2018

A Minn.-based car dealership that formerly held a state contract to sell Ford Police Interceptor Utility (PIU) vehicles is issuing refund checks to law enforcement agencies after it was discovered the dealership overcharged for its PIUs.

Gerry Worner, former fleet manager for Nelson Auto Center, was charged in a five-count complaint with felony by swindle and signed an agreement to plead guilty to one of the counts last month, reports KFGO.

An audit from the Minnesota Department of Administration found that taxpayers were overcharged a total $803,309 on 3,225 vehicles on sales dating back to 2010, reports KARE 11. In addition, Minnesota’s Office of the Legislative Auditor is still conducting a probe of the double billing on the state contract and will look at additional steps government agencies need to adopt to prevent a similar occurrence in the future.

$803,309 is a lot of money, but once you break it down by the 3225 vehicles that represents, that's less than $250 per vehicle. It's no wonder why it took so long to catch.
Some people and companies enjoy overcharging the government thinking they're 'sticking it to the man' when in fact, they're only sticking it to themselves (and the rest of us). That's taxpayer money they're stealing and the more they steal, the less our tax dollars can buy, therefore leading to more and higher taxes. This ONE GUY stole, on average, $100,000 every year from the taxpayers. There are thousands of people and companies doing this every day so there's no wonder why we keep getting less and less for our tax dollars.
