Safety First! is not a slogan in Facilities-Fleet-Central Stores (FFCS) at the City of Santa Ana, Calif.— it is a daily routine. After FFCS staff completed 365 consecutive calendar days without an OSHA or Workers’ Comp reportable injury in late 2014, FFCS Manager Rick Longobart celebrated the milestone by treating staff to a pizza party at the Corporate Yard.

The focus on safety has both personal and organizational benefits. On a personal level, each FFCS employee is looking out for his/her body because that body is what he/she uses to earn a living. On an organizational level, injury-free FFCS employees mean lower Workers’ Comp costs, which translate to lower internal service fund charges to city departments.
