New York City to Auction Off Fleet of Cars

January 12, 2009

NEW YORK - Nearly 700 New York City-owned vehicles will go on the auction block as the Bloomberg administration looks for more ways to curb city spending.

Almost a dozen city agencies that rely on auto transportation have been ordered by the Mayor's office to reduce their fleets of cars and lower spending on fuel and vehicle maintenance.

City Hall is asking for ten percent of each agency's non-emergency vehicles to be sold by the end of March. The city hopes to save some $20 million over the next two years.

The move not only helps fill the ballooning budget gap, it also reinforces the mayor's desire to untangle vehicle traffic and reduce the city's carbon emissions by 30 percent over the next 10 years.
