SAN DIEGO – A plan was advanced by the San Diego City Council's Public Safety and Neighborhood Services Committee to purchase up to 65 new BMW motorcycles to replace the San Diego Police Department's obsolete fleet, according to www.10news.com. At a cost of about $1.1 million, the department will buy 55 motorcycles with money from an unlicensed driver vehicle impound fee. The department currently has 72 Kawasaki motorcycles averaging over 56,000 miles. Kawasaki has stopped making police motorcycles, which makes it hard for the department to maintain the fleet due to a lack of available parts.
