Auto Dealership Protests Car Auction in California

February 23, 2005

SACRAMENTO, CA – Downtown Ford in Sacramento, Calif., is scheduled to file a formal protest against the Department of General Services and is accusing the agency of improperly awarding a $21 million police car contract to a rival dealer, according to the Associated Press.

Attorneys for Downtown Ford said that state officials violated their own bid policies in giving the contract to Folsom, Calif.-based Folsom Lake Ford after Downtown Ford initially won the auction to sell the state up to 1,000 police cars. The reverse auction took place online, with potential sellers making a successive bid lower than the previous one.

Downtown Ford won the auction, but placed a low bid that was higher than what the state paid last year for the same cars. State officials opened another round of bids on paper and received a better price from Folsom Lake Ford.
