Fire Chief Suspended for Improper Vehicle Use

December 1, 2004

HAMMOND, IN – The fire chief of Hammond, Ind., received a five-day suspension after admitting he drove his city-owned vehicle to a bar, reported the Munster Times newspaper.Mayor Thomas McDermott Jr. said it is a general rule that employees should not use city vehicles to go to any establishment primarily known for the sale of alcohol. After attending an official city function, the fire chief drove to a bar and then asked a fellow city worker who had not been drinking to drive his vehicle home. The designated driver called 911 emergency dispatch to request a ride back to the bar to get her own car, prompting an internal investigation in the police department, according to the Munster Times. The city has faced other controversies this year regarding the take-home vehicle policy. The city council passed a law in June to prevent city-owned cars from leaving the city, which affected about 45 vehicles.
