Michigan State Police Releases 2013-MY Police Motorcycle Preliminary Test Results

LANSING, MI – Michigan State Police released its preliminary test results of 2013-MY police motorcycles. The police agency tested four models, including the BMW R 1200 RTP, the Harley Davidson Road King FLHP, the Harley Davidson Electra Glide FLHTP, and the Victory Commander I. The organization evaluated motorcycle acceleration and speed, braking, and vehicle dynamics.

To start, the BMW R 1200 RTP came in first place for speed, with a top speed of 128 mph. It also had the fastest 0 to 60 mph time at 4.38 seconds and the lowest 0 to 100 mph time at 10.90 seconds. Coming in second place was the Victory Commander I, at 5.66 seconds for the 0 to 60 mph test and 18.04 seconds at the 0 to 100 mph test.

For the brake tests, the BMW R 1200 RTP had the shortest stopping distance, going from 60 to 0 mph, at 143.9 ft. The Harley Davidson Electra Glide FLHTP came in second at 144.2 ft.

The vehicle dynamics testing, which involves an average of how long it takes each vehicle to go through each of five laps, saw the BMW R 1200 RTP again as the lead, at an average lap time of 1:41:11. In second place was the HD FLHP Road King, at 1:49:21, with the Harley Davidson Electra Glide FLHTP, and the Victory Commander I coming in third and fourth, respectively.

    The accleration ability should be reviewed as time and distance required to chase down and stop a violators vehicle.
    If a speeder goes by at 80mph. The patrol motorcycle must then accelerate and catch up to the speeder. For ever second spent accelerating the violator is still moving 117 feet per second. The Harley requires 11 seconds just to match the violators speed. This is 1287 feet that must be closed to catch the speeding vehicle. Over a full minute to catch the violator on a Harley.

    The BMW matches the speed of a violator 500' quicker. Then can accelerate to catch the violator much quicker than the Harley,
