Ford Offers New F-150 Special Service Vehicle Package

June 11, 2012

DEARBORN, MI – Ford is now offering a new F-150 Special Service Vehicle (SSV) Package designed for government, municipal, and commercial fleets. The automaker said this is a no-charge package for fleets. The package will be available for SuperCab and SuperCrew configurations, 4x2 and 4x4 models, and will offer a choice of 5.0L V-8 or 3.5L EcoBoost engines. These engines are paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. Engine specs are listed at the bottom of the story.

The package will offer a high-capacity 220-amp alternator to support fleet-class electrical needs. The interior features an overhaul to accommodate government and commercial fleet needs. The SSV seating package is 40/20/40, with the center 20 percent omitted to maximize space for in-cab aftermarket equipment, such as law enforcement communications and firearms installations. The central console is omitted as well to make additional room.

The driver and first-row passenger seating surfaces are upholstered in cloth that Ford says cleans easily. The three-across, full-width second-row seat is covered completely in vinyl, for use in law enforcement use or for work-crew transport.

Ford said it’s not placing any restrictions on optional F-150 content, which gives fleets flexibility when determining vehicle specifications. For example, F-150 SSV buyers can specify heavy-duty tires, 4x4 skid plates, and interior convenience content.

“Our fleet customers have been asking us to create this option for F-Series trucks,” said Ford Government Sales Manager Tony Gratson. “We’re confident the current and updated 2013 F-150 equipped with the SSV Package will be of particular interest to our government customers with rugged jobs such as law enforcement, firefighting, and national and state park patrols.”

The MOST IMPORTANT OPTION customers want for the F150 is a CNG bifuel truck!!

F150 buyers aren't looking for a real work truck: you have to upgrade to a SD for that. Ford is making an aluminum coach F150 for MY2015; the best thing Ford could do is (1) put a luxury-class, handling-oriented, 4-wheel independent suspension under it, (2) give it a proper sedan (LTC) ride height, (3) make the seat heights a bit higher and the roof a bit higher (both of those as referenced from the floor) and raise the base of the windshield at least 15 percent, and (4) either develop a proper sedan based on that F150 chassis and crew-cab dimensions, or blend the cab and the bed ("Nuevo Ranchero") -- but #4 is optional. Oh, Ford should also cut its MSRPs about 40-percent across the board, but that's just because its service network is the single factor most likely to ruin the customer's auto.

Ford should make the SSV's available to the public. Why not?
