Compact Pickups Bolster May Depreciation

The average price of a used vehicle from the 2009 to 2013 model years fell 1.2 percent in May with several truck and van segments registering positive gains from April, according to Black Book.

Compact pickups increased 1 percent in value to lead the way among all segments with an average price of $19,145. This category includes the Nissan Frontier, Mazda Pickup, Ford Ranger and Toyota Tacoma.

Full-size cargo vans increased 0.5 percent to $18,138, and full-size passenger vans gained 0.1 percent to $18,400. Premium sporty cars were flat at $45,307.

After finishing with the strongest retention in April, Compact SUVs saw the largest segment depreciation during May at 3.6 percent. Vehicles in this segment, which include the Jeep Wrangler and Nissan Xterra, finished the month with an average price of $24,129, a 3.9-percent decline from year-ago levels ($25,112).

Year over year, only full-size passenger vans increased in value by 0.9 percent.

For the month, domestic cars depreciated 1.4 percent, while import cars depreciated 2 percent. Domestic trucks depreciated 0.8%; and import trucks depreciated 0.4 percent. The full 2015-year depreciation should come in at 14.5 percent, according to Black Book. Average pre-recession annual depreciation has been between 15 percent to 18 percent.
