Overnight EV Charging Saves NYC $150K Annually

New York City is now earning money for charging its 1,030 electric fleet cars and trucks at off-peak times. By enrolling in Con Edison’s SmartCharge New York Program, the city’s Department of Citywide Administrative Services (DCAS) expects to save up to $150,000 per year by charging its electric vehicles (EVs) overnight. It will reinvest this money into buying additional electric vehicles and chargers, according to a city release.

The initiative, part of Mayor Bill de Blasio’s NYC Clean Fleet sustainability program, will also reduce stress on the electric delivery grid.

New York DCAS uses the ChargePoint EV charging solution, which has smart connected chargers and embedded meters that will allow the city to share charging data with Con Edison in order to calculate off-peak energy use.

EV operators in the Con Edison territory that don’t have ChargePoint stations can participate by using a free cellular-enabled FleetCarma C2 connected car device that plugs into the on-board diagnostic port and collects charging and driving data.
