VIDEO: Winter Driving Advice

The first heavy snowstorm of the season caused two deaths and hundreds of crashes this past weekend, first striking the Midwest and then moving to the Northeast. Parts of upstate New York got up to 18 inches of snow.

That means it’s time again to revisit safe driving practices for winter-like temperatures and road conditions. Here are some winter driving preparedness tips from Ameriprise you can pass along to fleet drivers as a friendly reminder:

  • Routinely check headlights, taillights, blinkers, and brake lights to ensure your vehicle is always visible no matter what the weather.
  • Inspect important valves, belts, and hoses for cracks or leaks and replace old filters. Check them more often if you live in an especially cold climate.
  • Check the tire pressure monthly. (Your fleet manager will know whether snow tires are necessary for extra control during snow season.)
  • Check wiper blades for deterioration and have a spare on-hand. Keep the windshield washer reservoir full and add de-icing solution to prevent ice from forming on the windows.
  • Keep the gas tank two-thirds full to avoid fuel line freezing or running empty. Use an isopropyl alcohol additive as an extra measure against fuel line freezing.
