LOS ANGELES – A report from the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) recommends that the organization add automatic vehicle locating systems (AVL) to all of its fleet vehicles, rather than some of them, in order to help improve response times, among other measures.

The LAFD’s Fire Chief Brian L. Cummings, with support from the Board of Fire Commissioners, commissioned a study to address concerns about reported vs. actual LAFD response times. The report noted a number of recommendations to address some of the technology shortcomings of the agency, including developing a comprehensive “technology-based” strategic plan.

The report also said the department should improve its Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system and integrate AVL into the CAD system.
