AUSTIN, TX - Austin police cars will be outfitted with improved dashboard cameras in a plan to abandon use of outdated videotape.

The Austin City Council on August 5 approved spending $15.5 million for the new cameras and digital equipment. The cameras can be set to automatically activate when officers open the doors of the patrol car, according to The Associated Press.

Officers currently must manually start the tapes.

Police say the updated equipment will help with evidence gathering.
