ALBUQUERQUE, NM - The Albuquerque Police Department (APD) is evaluating its take-home car program at the request of the city council, according to KOB.com.

With a fleet of about 1,100 take-home cars, the APD is looking at everything from mileage to officer commutes, to how long the vehicles last. One hundred ninety-five officers take their vehicles outside of the city.

APD says take-home vehicles have a longer life span than vehicles rotated between officer shifts, because they're treated like personal cars, KOB.com reported.

The APD take-home program has been around for about 25 years, reported KOB.com.
