NEW YORKMayor Michael Bloomberg and Police Commissioner Ray Kelly recently deployed 40 marked and unmarked Nissan Altima hybrid patrol cars in the city's fleet, according to NY1.

The cars are part of the mayor's plan to slash city emissions by 30 percent by 2017.

Kelly said the new vehicles will be utilized in high stop-and-go traffic areas such as Midtown and Manhattan, as well as in precincts with the greatest ground to cover.

After a year of monitoring, the department will decide whether or not to add more 35 miles per gallon vehicles to its fleet, according to NY1.
