The legal victory for the sheriff’s department was a blow for the Fayette County Board of Commissioners, which had wanted the department to use its fleet management staff to conduct maintenance on its vehicle fleet. The board also argued that the department should use the county’s purchasing system instead of its own.
During the proceedings, several employees of the sheriff’s department told the judge that the county’s computerized purchasing system has significantly increased their workload. Prior to the ruling, sheriff’s officials had been using the purchasing system used by all other county government departments since Apr. 4 because of a temporary court order. The temporary order also required them to use the county’s fleet maintenance shop for maintenance on all vehicles, according to the report.
