The City of Greensboro, N.C., announced it is suspending all residential curbside yard waste collection and requiring residents to make an appointment to dispose of bulk items. The suspension allows the city to focus its resources on garbage and recycling collection, as it has seen an increase in residential waste due to the coronavirus, according to a city release.

The policy is also intended to protect the health of the city’s collection crews, the News & Record reported. Unlike the city’s fleet of automated garbage trucks, collecting yard waste and bulk items often involves a two- or three-person crew engaged in hands-on physical labor. With two or three people in each truck, workers can’t maintain social distancing.
