The City of San Diego plans to spend $21 million over the next five years to replace the Police Department’s aging fleet of four helicopters purchased in 2004 and 2005, the San Diego Union Tribune reported.

Elected officials approved a five-year agreement with Airbus Helicopters to immediately buy one helicopter for $4.6 million with the option to purchase three more for $5.5 million each by 2024. City council will be required to approve each of the additional helicopter purchases.

Funding for the first helicopter comes from seized asset funds, according to city council documents.
