The Douglas County, Nev., Sheriff’s Office has authorized patrol deputies to take home their assigned police vehicles to maximize the effectiveness of the Patrol Division, The Record-Courier reported.

Officials cited a study of a similar-sized police agency showing that assigned vehicles lasted 60 months while shared vehicles lasted only 20-26 months. Shared vehicle maintenance cost was also six times higher.
