Fleet FAQ? Fleet Safety & Risk Management

Q. We’re considering adding telematics to help monitor our fuel use. I’ve also heard that it can help with driver safety, too, is that true?

A. Yes, when used correctly, telematics can be a very powerful tool to monitor, address, and minimize risk. The data can be utilized to drive recognition for both good and bad performance across the fleet. It’s critical to share the data with drivers and their field managers to show how they stack up against each other. Telematics provides the opportunity for fleets to provide tangible awards (a bonus, plaque, or prize) for the driver with the top performance over a set period of time. While telematics performance leaderboards develop a sense of pride, élan, and even a bit of healthy competition, it fulfills an even more important operational imperative by helping fleet managers identify distinct risky behaviors in the lower scoring drivers, allowing them the opportunity to implement an incident-based strategic training program to correct risky behavior as it occurs.
