A judge ordered the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD) to pay $11.75 million to the family of a bicyclist who was hit and killed by a deputy who swerved into the bike lane while typing on his laptop.

The incident occurred in December 2013 in Calabasas, Calif. The police cruiser hit and killed a man on his bicycle. The deputy was not charged criminally, but CBS News reports that an internal LASD investigation was conducted and found that the deputy violated department policy.
