The City of Hammond, Ind., is switching its fleet to propane autogas bi-fuel vehicles as part of an effort to save $26 million over the next 15 years, the Chicago Tribune reported. Other initiatives include LED lights and automatic controls and HVAC systems for various buildings to reduce utility, fuel, and maintenance costs, according to the city.

So far, the city has 76 new vehicles in place, including police vehicles, garbage trucks, a street sweeper, and several cars, the newspaper reported. The Police Department expects to save $750,000 per year on fuel costs with the new propane-autogas vehicles.
