GPS tracking can also provide engine alert warnings known as diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs). Having the finger on the pulse of your vehicles' health can be a powerful way that fleets can see ROI. For instance, a California government fleet customer of Verizon Networkfleet that installed telematics in 82 of its units was able to pay for the first year of the product. Through a combination of fuel and maintenance savings, it recouped about $15,000. Telematics can also provide other ROI benefits, such as accurate engine hour tracking and vehicle data, better tracking of service records and streamlining maintenance and labor costs, and better routing for less wear-and-tear on the vehicles, which can result in maintenance savings.
