Prior to approving its 2018 budget, the Lake County (Ind.) Council reversed its earlier decision to create centralized maintenance operations for county-owned vehicles, the Chicago Tribune reported.

Rather than transferring funds to the commissioners to run the garage, the council opted to direct it to the Sheriff’s Department. The new decision reflects commissioners' understanding of police concerns about losing control of vehicle maintenance.

The garage may also be used to maintain other vehicles in the county fleet.
