The City of Tampa, Fla., responded to a local news station’s question about why 27% of its 2,500 vehicles are underutilized, as found in a January audit. The audit identified underutilized vehicles as being used 4,000 miles or fewer in a one-year time frame.

City staffers told ABC Action News that of the 600 vehicles, only 180 were legitimately underutilized. The rest consist of vehicles awaiting upfitting, vehicles that are necessary but travel few miles, and vehicles used to deter crime. The underutilized vehicles have been sold, transferred to other departments, or are being evaluated.

According to audit documents, fleet staff is also re-establishing its utilization policy.
