In preparation for New Year's Eve, the New York Police Department (NYPD) is enlisting the help of its Sanitation Department. For added security around Times Square, the city is deploying garbage trucks loaded with sand, reports the New York Times.

Garbage trucks full of sand are placed along sidewalks to protect pedestrians in an effort to deter truck attacks. The trucks weigh about 16 tons, and that weight is nearly doubled when filled with sand. The NYPD is also deploying more than 100 police vehicles, helicopters, and boats from its Harbor Unit. Close to two million people are expected to gather in Times Square on New Year's Eve.
