The fourth-generation Smart Fortwo Electric Drive increases driving range to 80 miles and improves charging so that it's twice as fast as the previous model, the Daimler unit announced ahead of the Los Angeles Auto Show.

The vehicle features an 81-hp electric motor that produces 118 lb.-ft. of torque and a maximum speed of 81 mph, set in order to maximize range. Range this year is nearly 18% higher than the previous model year.

The vehicle comes with a new on-board charger as a standard feature, which reduces charging time to 2.5 hours, half as long as the predecessor. The charging time from a household socket is 13 hours from 0-80% charge. A “smart control” app allows drivers to monitor charging from afar and access functions such as intelligent charging.

In addition, an optional fast charger allows drivers to charge the vehicle in less than 45 minutes if local conditions allow for three-phase charging.

The vehicle will arrive in early 2017.
