The City of Albany, N.Y., is running a pilot program for its newest recycling trucks. These custom-made haulers have an automated arm that grabs 64-gallon recycling bins and dumps them in the truck rather than requiring an employee to do the heavy lifting, according to a city release.

About 2,000 homes are involved in the pilot program, which started Monday, and were given new, larger recycling bins. In the release, the city said that it hopes these larger bins will encourage residents to recycle more. It also cuts down pickup time, saving money on fuel, overtime, and Workers’ Compensation.

The automated trucks are operated by one person will supplement the city’s “packer” trucks, which require three-person crews. Each truck costs $230,000, half of which will be paid for using grant funding, according to All Over Albany
