The Hollister (Calif.) Police Department has added an electric motorcycle to its patrol fleet with the help of a $19,256 grant from the Monterey Bay Air Pollution Control District, reports BenitoLink.com.

The City Council approved Detective Chris Wells' request to add the motorcycle that will "cost less to maintain" and doesn't require gasoline. The agency is testing the bike as an alternative to the traditional patrol car.

The EV is lightweight, slim and silent to help officers patrol high-crime areas "virtually undetected," Wells told the media outlet.
