Wyoming lawmakers are asking why a state agency is purchasing GPS units for 1,600 vehicles without first consulting them. The project costs $250,000 to purchase and install and includes additional ongoing monthly payments, reports the Casper Star Tribune.

The state’s Department of Administration and Information announced the rollout of telematics earlier this year after a successful six-month pilot. The department estimated it would save between $360,000 and $720,000 per year in reduced fuel costs.

Dean Fausset, the department's director, answered questions about the GPS devices at a hearing of the Joint Appropriations Committee and defended the purchase for its ability to save money and reduce emissions, according to the news source. Lawmakers questioned why they hadn’t been involved in the purchase process, and Fausset said he believed they didn’t need to request it from the committee.
