Vermeer Manufacturing Co. is recalling 21,401 brush chippers and stump cutters because they may have LED side marker lights that lack reflectors built into the lenses, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said.

As a result, the brush chippers and stump cutters may not be as visible to other motorists and may be violating certain federal safety standards, according to NHTSA.

The recall covers 2008-2016 model-year Vermeer BC1000XL, 2013-2016 BC700XL, 2012-2016 BC900XL, 2009-2016 BC1200XL, 2003-2016 BC1800XL, 2005-2014 BC600XL, 2005-2016 SC802 and 2005-2013 SC602 brush chippers and stump cutters.

“The absence of reflectors could reduce the ability for others to see the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash,” NHTSA said. To fix the problem, Vermeer will supply reflective decals to be installed on the trailer sides. There will be no charge.

Vehicle owners can reach Vermeer customer service at (800) 829-0051 or by email at productsafety@vermeer.com.
