The City of Melbourne, Fla., increased its property tax rate 10% to help fund the first year of  a multi-year replacement plan for public safety vehicles, Florida Today reported.

The tax hike will generate $2.6 million, and $1.2 million will be used to replace 38 aging police cars. According to budget documents, the city had deferred vehicle replacement to the point where vehicles were failing due to "metal fatigue." The budget recommends consistent funding each year for vehicle replacements.

The tax increase is part of a $199 million budget approved by the city council on Sept. 22.
