The Detroit Police Department has begun refurbishing decade-old patrol cars with the goal of returning 40 of these haggard vehicles to the streets, reports

The high-mileage cars will be issued as take-home vehicles to officers who work closely with residents. Several Detroit-area businesses are pitching in to donate work valued at up to $2,000 per car.

The vehicles are all 2004 or 2005 Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor sedans.
