The Philadelphia Police Department has launched an investigation of the safety of its police vans following a lawsuit by man injured during a ride, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported.

The city last month agreed to pay a $490,000 settlement to a man who broke his neck after riding unrestrained in a police van. The police vans have side-facing benches and often have grab belts instead of seat belts.

Police are conducting a study on how other police departments transport people under arrest.
