The State of Pennsylvania has reduced its fleet size by 2,500 passenger vehicles since 2011, resulting in a cost avoidance and savings of more than $65 million, Sheri Phillips, secretary of the state’s Dept. of General Services wrote in the Times Leader.

The fleet reduction represents 25% of the state fleet. She also stated that travel policies now require employees to use the least expensive travel option; state vehicles are better tracked; and fleet cars are smaller and more fuel efficient.

Fleet reduction efforts have been under way since 2011, and by 2013, the department had reduced its fleet by 2,000 passenger vehicles, leading to its winning the state's Innovation of the Year award.
