New York Propane Gas Association (NYPGA) is offering New York state residents including fleet users a $5,000 rebate to purchase a propane autogas vehicle or add a propane system to an existing vehicle.

The rebate is available to one vehicle per fleet, and the program runs until the end of this year. The vehicle must be certified by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) or California Air Resources Board (CARB).

Each program participant takes an initial survey when the application is submitted and a concluding survey after a year of the conversion. He or she is also responsible for a data log tracking miles, gallons used and vehicle performance on a monthly basis, according to the NYPGA's site.

The data collected will be used for those in the propane industry and vehicle manufacturers to compare vehicle performance running on gasoline compared to propane autogas.
