The City of Hattiesburg, Miss., has decided to keep its refuse collection in-house after receiving two bids from private companies for the service that were higher than the city’s costs, the Hattiesburg American reported.

City officials are looking into new leases for bigger and more durable vehicles with automated bodies, citing maintenance issues with its current fleet of 14 trucks.

The move also saves the jobs of the 35 sanitation employees. The outsourcing plan would likely have resulted in only half of the current employing being hired by the private contractor.
